University of Nebraska-Lincoln - Architecture program director and faculty member Jeffrey L. Day's Blue Barn Theatre architectural design is featured in Slate.com's list for "The Best Things America Built in 2016." This project was conceived as a new arts hub in a rapidly changing district near downtown Omaha. The experimental theatre opens to the city outdoors through a public open space anchored with a mixed-use building.

This design has won numerous awards including an American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2016 Nebraska Honor Award; a 2016 Merit Award from the AIA Central States Region; a 2016 International Illuminance Award, Special Citation for Outdoor Lighting Design, Illuminating Engineering Society; a 2016 AIA San Francisco Special Commendation for Urban Design; and a 2016 Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Faculty Design Award.

Other members of the design team include: UNL Architecture Lecturers Ashley Byars and Geoff DeOld, UNL Architecture alumni Daniel Conces and Dennis Krymuza, and E.B. Min and Kristen Smith.
