Brief Vitae
B.A. Princeton University
Ph.D. Princeton University
Teaching since 1975 in programs of interior design, urban planning, architecture and housing. Conducts research and publishes articles in the area of environment-behavior, design, and post occupancy evaluation. Has successfully competed for several research and instructional development grants. Duncan has served as Program Director for Interior Design at Indiana University (1985-1991) and Program Coordinator for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1993-94), where he teaches in the Interior Design Program.
Areas of Interest
Investigations into the relationship of design process and design research, examining ways in which research can better inform the way we design the built environment. Topics of interest include: environment- behavior, programming, design guidelines, pattern language, phenomenology, design methods, passive solar design, energy conservation, housing standards, intelligent environments, and implications of information technology for design. An additional interest in instructional development and teaching techniques for design instruction, including computer assisted instruction. Has developed a computerized basic design course, authored a tutorial on gestalt perception, and taught hypertext applications for a course in design research and programming.
