Brief Vitae

B.S. Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology
M. Architecture, University of Houston

Involved in professional practice since 1977 most notably with Charles Tapley Architects where published projects, Bethany Lutheran Church in Denver, Colorado and Notre Dame Catholic Church in Kerrville, Texas were designed. Teaching since 1989 at the University of Nebraska, after a brief stint at the University of Houston, Mark has been involved at all levels of design from beginning to the end of the studio sequence and from large to intimate scale. Preferring the extremes, most recently he has settled into teaching basic design, mid-level tectonics and mentoring a number of thesis students. Practice has reemerged with the published design for the Omaha Interpretative Center and a number of recently constructed projects including the headquarters for Security Mutual Life Insurance.

Areas of Interest

Mark considers himself to be an intellectual vagabond rather than a specialist. The common thread that runs through his wandering spirit is an interest in the pursuit of reality in its poetic sense found most often in the space between. Shunning utopia as a nightmare, he is tenaciously looking for the beauty of imperfection. Following his tendencies toward a broad inquiry, he is currently exploring the communicative powers of materiality in design and the impact of computers on representation and design.
