Steven N. Rodie, ASLA, is a Courtesy Assoc. Professor in the Landscape Architecture Program, College of Architecture, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). He is also an Assoc. Professor/Landscape Horticulture Specialist in the UNL Department of Agronomy & Horticulture, a Courtesy Faculty member of the Department of Biology and the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), and serves as the advisor for the Pre-Landscape Architecture transfer program at UNO.
Prior to teaching at UNL, he practiced landscape architecture in Colorado and California. His professional practice focus includes visual resources and environmental assessment for a wide variety of projects (land development, utility and transportation corridors, ski areas/recreation areas, public works, etc.) and clients (such as the US Air Force Academy, US Forest Service, National Park Service, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, CA and CO Departments of Transportation).
He has authored or co-authored 25 refereed/peer-reviewed publications, 6 refereed conference proceedings and 4 refereed research presentations; participated on 7 graduate thesis committees; been a primary author, co-author, or team author on grants and donations totaling over $610,000; organized, coordinated and/or instructed 29 workshops and symposia; and given over 200 presentations on sustainable design-related topics to 27 sponsoring organizations representing local, regional, national and international audiences.
Current/recent commitments to professional service include the Nebraska State Board of Landscape Architects; Board of Trustees, Emerging Professionals Committee, and Honors and Awards Committee, American Society of Landscape Architects; Board of Directors, Nebraska Arborists Association; and various design review committees and task forces for Omaha by Design.
Areas of Interest
He teaches courses in landscape plants, landscape/environmental appreciation and landscape design; future curriculum involvement will include stormwater management best management practices. His extension appointment focuses on regional training activities and publications in sustainable landscape design and stormwater management for all segments of the green industry. Research interests include plant adaptability for green infrastructure, and people-plant and people-nature connections as they define landscape preferences and impact perceived personal quality-of-life.
