III. General Requirements:

Each student is required to apply for admission into the professional program after completing the pre-professional curriculum for the Landscape Architecture Program. The admissions committee adds three numbers together to determine the rank order for admission. The first number is the student’s cumulative grade point average, the second is a weighted grade point average in which the LARC courses are given twice the weight as the rest of the courses, and the third number is the portfolio evaluation. Student’s portfolios are reviewed by a team of three faculty members either individually or as a group and are ranked in quartiles. If reviewed separately the quartile ranks are averaged. The program admits approximately the top fifteen students. Students who are not accepted can apply up to three times. Students are also required to pay a $45 application fee.

IV. Portfolio Requirements:

Each student submits a portfolio of 10 pages of work (8 1/2 X 11 inches, one-side only). The portfolio should offer sufficient evidence for the following items to be evaluated.

1. Skills Development
a. Freehand observational drawing: The drawing demonstrates strong observational skills and is well proportioned; line and shade are highly descriptive and expressive; drawing shows the volumetric and structural qualities of the object; drawing demonstrates outstanding ability to translate a three-dimensional object into two dimensions.

b. Composition (two-dimensional and three-dimensional): Elements are arranged so that the viewer's eye moves through the composition consistent with the student's intentions; the basics of formal expression are effectively used; the hierarchy of parts is effective; no extraneous components; expressive ability in both two and three dimensions.

c. Delineation: Describes the spatial characteristics of a design in plan, section, elevation, and perspective. Views are selected for their clarity in conveying the nature of the design and expressive potential relative to design intention. Drawings should demonstrate a superior ability to use appropriate representational platforms including both hand and digital drawing in the analysis of form. Drawings should also reflect knowledge of the conventions of representation and demonstrate the limits of these conventions, excellent line weight, and have a scalar consistency.

e. Craft: The assembled space is consistent and complete; the method of construction supports the designer's intentions and: the nature of the materials used for the construction are exploited to reinforce the intention.

f. Representation of light, materials, and color: Demonstrates superior ability to depict space through the representation of light and material presence (weight, texture, reflectivity, etc.); accomplishment in the application of color theory and its application; hue, value, shading, and intensity are used to communicate a sense of depth that is logical.

2. Design process
Student is in command of the design as a rational process; makes clear problem statements; shows superior performance of analysis and the use of this information to inform decision making; demonstrates exploration of alternatives as evidence of inquiry; makes decisions grounded in research; shows development and enhancement of selected alternative.

3. Portfolio Design
a. Page design and layout: has consistent format and excellent composition; extends the information from page-to-page; easy to read; achieves balance with visual information and relaxation; eye is directed to information; effectively communicates the design and its intent with transparency and accuracy; demonstrates excellent craft.

b. Content: The portfolio contains ten, one-sided pages; the work contained within the portfolio permits an adequate evaluation
