Master of Community and Regional Planning / Master of Science in Civil Engineering
The MCRP/MSCE dual degree program is offered in collaboration with the UNL Department of Civil Engineering. This program enables completion of both the MCRP degree and MS in Civil Engineering (transportation specialization) in two and one-half years of full-time study. This program is intended for persons who hold a BS in Civil Engineering or equivalent degree.
Professionals in the fields of planning and civil engineering are commonly called upon to assist decision makers in the definition and resolution of complex issues relating to the future of the natural and built environments in order to bring about desirable change and improve the quality of life. Persons who are educated both in planning and civil engineering are uniquely equipped to visualize and understand many of these complex issues from both policy making and physical / technical frames of reference and possess creativity and problem solving skills and techniques required to address them.
The intent of this joint degree program is to prepare students for a variety of professional roles in which the knowledge, skills, and training of both the planner and the civil engineer are synthesized and applied. These roles include, but are not limited to, professional work in the following areas:
- transportation planning
- traffic planning and management
- land use planning and growth management
- city planning and management
- subdivision planning and site design
- land development
Persons completing this joint degree program will have the opportunity to attain professional status in either or both of the planning and engineering professions. Planner/engineers find challenging professional positions in a wide variety of private sector and non-profit organizations, in all levels of government, as well as in international settings.
