The US Environmental Protection Agency has officially awarded Associate Professor Zhenghong Tang a research grant award entitled, “Using Ground Penetrating Radar to Map Playa Sediment Vertical Profile for Wetland Restoration Decision Making.” Culturally accelerated sedimentation continues to be a serious threat to playa wetlands and has profound impacts on their ecology. Mapping the sediment vertical profile is critical to understand the distribution, pattern and trend of sediment in playa wetlands. This project aims to catalog current sediment conditions of playa wetlands so that future restoration plans can be prioritized and completed with little to no field work. This project will collaborate with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and multiple Natural Resources Districts in Nebraska.
