Professor of Architecture and Landscape Architecture Director Mark Hoistad faithfully served the college and its alumni for over 34 years, starting as an assistant professor in 1989 and promoted to associate professor with tenure in 1995 and full professor in 2001. Hoistad built a well-deserved reputation as a renowned, internationally respected urban designer who has worked on design projects on five continents. This work has ranged in scale from urban design projects in the United States, Africa and Asia, through a collection of building types including commercial, residential and institutional projects, down to the intimate scale of liturgical furniture and decorative arts objects. This work has been published in professional journals and received numerous design awards.
Throughout his tenure, Hoistad held various administrative positions during which he founded a new Landscape Architecture Program, served as program director for Architecture and Landscape Architecture and as Associate Dean. Working collaboratively, Hoistad established several interdisciplinary connections across the university, and developed a semester-long study program in China. It is this connection to China as well as serving as the Landscape Architecture Program director that have been the seminal passions of his career.
