Yujia Wang is a landscape architect and Associate Professor of Practice in the Landscape Architecture Program at the College of Architecture, University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He is also a Faculty Fellow at the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute (https://waterforfood.nebraska.edu/resources/annual-report-2023/education/faculty-fellows/dwfi-welcomes-nine-new-faculty-fellows). His research examines the tangible and intangible performance of urban public landscapes, such as urban parks and community spaces, with a mission to inform and integrate human–nature co-benefits as part of nature-based solutions in design and policy practice in the urban domain. This includes a research project on the emotional and restorative benefits of different types of urban parks, conducted with an interdisciplinary team at UNL involving psychology and economics researchers. He also evaluates urban park features in heat mitigation using statistical and ML methods. Wang has received funding from the Landscape Architecture Foundation (https://www.lafoundation.org/), one of the most prominent disciplinary research funds in the field of landscape architecture. His landscape performance evaluation work is included in the Landscape Performance Series archive (https://www.landscapeperformance.org/case-study-briefs/fish-tail-park).
Wang is an invested and recognized educator. He has received the College of Architecture Excellence in Teaching Award and the Robert and Helen Chastain Award for his work in teaching and pedagogical research. He has published multiple pedagogical papers, including one that won an Outstanding Paper Award at a landscape architecture educators’ conference. He provides educational leadership and service, including serving as a sub-committee chair on the American Society of Landscape Architects’ Committee on Education and as a current member of UNL’s Center for Transformative Teaching Advisory Board (https://teaching.unl.edu/). Wang brings research expertise and multiple years of design leadership and project experience into the classroom to teach the next generation of landscape architects and designers, and works with both local and global partners to create enriching learning experiences. He has advised and sponsored student research, resulting in multiple successfully funded UCARE proposals. Students under his supervision have been accepted at national conferences, published their work, and been invited to present at student research night at the Governor’s Mansion. He also leads the summer Nebraska Abroad Program in Rome (https://unl-global-experiences.via-trm.com/program_brochure/20053).
Wang is highly active in creative activities. His design portfolio ranges from large public parks to engagement- and process-driven community gardens, and he has built partnerships with internationally renowned design offices. He has won two regional ASLA Professional Awards (https://www.ndcasla.org/awards-1), among the most distinguished recognitions for landscape architecture projects, in acknowledgment of the excellence and impact of his design work. He has also curated exhibitions at UABB (https://www.uabb-sz.com/en), one of the most visited architectural biennales globally.
Wang is also a visible contributor and impactful figure in the discipline. He was a juror for the national ASLA Professional Awards (https://www.asla.org/NewsReleaseDetails.aspx?id=64195), the most prestigious awards for landscape architecture globally. He serves on the national ASLA Climate Action and Biodiversity Committee and co-leads the International Professional Practice Network. His work and expertise have been featured in both professional and general media, for example in New Scientist (https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg26435180-100-extreme-heat-is-now-making-cities-unlivable-how-can-we-survive-it/).
