2020 NAAB Conditions and Procedures Update

Did you know that NAAB (National Architecture Accrediting Board) is updating their Conditions for Accreditation and Procedures for Accreditation? Did you also know that AIAS and students get a say in these edits? AIAS has advocated on crucial topics important to students such as: access to an interdisciplinary education; actionable attempts at cultivating diversity; a healthy and enforceable Learning & Teaching Culture Policy (i.e. Studio Culture Policy) ; and fundamental environmental literacy.

In order to become a licensed architect one must graduate from an accredited architecture program. The requirements that an accredited degree program must meet and the procedures that it and the visiting teams must follow to demonstrate the achievement of minimum standards and a uniform accrediting process are these conditions which are being reviewed.

The NAAB is seeking public comment over the 2020 draft document. The public comment and review of “Draft 1” versions of the 2020 Conditions for Accreditation and the 2020 Procedures for Accreditation ends November 22, 2019. Email forum@naab.org to submit comments. The NAAB also released this supporting document.

AIAS has promised to “undertake research, writing and proposing a Universal Learning and Teaching Culture Policy for both the academy and practice, for support and endorsement (i.e. signature) by other collaterals. And as students are the future of the profession, the AIAS is also committed to holding everyone accountable.” Review the documents and submit your comments; get your voices heard!
