VELUX Award 2024

Registrations for the International VELUX Award 2024 for Students of Architecture are open!

The VELUX Group invites the students of architecture to participate in the International VELUX Award competition on the theme “Light of Tomorrow”. The 2024 competition is the 11th edition, which so far has received thousands of exciting daylight projects from more than 6000 students of architecture around the world.
Since the International VELUX Award for Students of Architecture was first launched in 2004, it has grown into what is probably the largest competition for students of architecture, the architects who will shape the buildings of our future.
The award invites students to explore the role of daylight in architecture and inspire new thinking. The aim of the award is to encourage and challenge students of architecture, and to create a deeper understanding of this specific and ever-relevant source of energy, light and life.
The student teams will work on their projects in one of the two categories: ‘Daylight in buildings’ or ‘Daylight investigations’.

Register now
The registration for the participation in the competition is open from 1 September 2023 and stays open until 01 April 2024.
To participate in the competition, first step for students is registration with an e-mail address and a phone number. The students are then encouraged to gather their team, connect with the teacher and start developing their project already during the registration phase. In this way, students can have several months to develop their ideas into innovative and out-of-the-box daylight projects.
Register here. https://iva.awardsplatform.com/
Deadline is May 30th

2024 Timber in the City Competition

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) is pleased to announce TIMBER IN THE CITY 5: Urban Habitats Competition for the 2023-2024 academic year. The program is intended to challenge students, working individually or in teams, to reimagine the boundaries of wood construction in the urban environment, leading to the transformation of our existing cities through constructing sustainable buildings made from renewable resources, offering expedient affordable construction, innovating with new and traditional wood materials, and designing healthy living and working environments. This is the fifth competition in the TIMBER IN THE CITY series, and this year provides an opportunity to meet urban housing needs through the addition of an overbuild, or vertical extension, made of wood to an existing building or structure. Mass timber’s light weight makes it a natural choice for overbuild designs. In addition to helping maintain a building’s original architecture or design, wood’s light construction footprint may allow tenants to remain in an existing building during construction, as opposed to forcing tenants out while the existing structure is reinforced.

CTBUH 2023-24 Mass Timber Student Design Competition

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is now accepting submissions for the CTBUH 2023-24 Mass Timber Student Design Competition—culminating with the top finalists presenting to the jury for winning distinctions at a virtual event in fall 2024.

The goal of the competition, which is open to all students who are currently enrolled at U.S. and Canada-based institutes, is to shed new light on the meaning and value of tall buildings in modern society. This competition focuses on the use of mass timber in multi-story buildings through the lens of affordable housing that emphasizes rapid development. The only stipulation is that the building should be multi-storied (i.e., not a pavilion or single space), and be designed to maximize the use and expression of mass timber while taking into consideration the 2021 IBC building code and current standards. It is also suggested that participants consider prefabricated components or volumetric modular approach to highlight the benefit of utilizing mass timber for rapid development.

The Existing Conditions Innovation Challenge

Entrants are tasked with crafting a single, comprehensive architectural illustration that encapsulates their in-depth analysis and understanding of a real-world project, based on the 3D point cloud and Revit model we supply. This visual representation should not only demonstrate technical proficiency and innovation in digital documentation but also convey a clear, compelling narrative about the project’s architectural significance, spatial dynamics, potential for sustainability, and integration within its environment. Students will create a three- to five-minute video narrative to accompany their architectural illustration.
