Brief Vitae

Derek Miller is the Long Range & Mobility Planning manager with the City Omaha Planning Department and has been with the department for 16 years. He also served as a city planner with the City of Bellevue, Nebraska and Lincoln, Nebraska. Miller began his career as a planning consultant with JEO Consulting Group Inc. working throughout the Midwest.

He holds a bachelor's degree in Urban Studies from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (1998), a master's degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln (2002) and a Graduate Certificate in Public Management through the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

He has been a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners since 2003 and served on the American Planning Association, Nebraska Chapter Executive Board from 2008 through 2019. He served as the Vice President / Professional Development Officer from 2008 through 2013, Chapter President from 2014 through 2017 and Immediate Past President from 2018 through 2019.

Miller is currently serving a five year term on the Nebraska State Board as Landscape Architects, appointed by the Governor as the Public Member in 2019.

Miller believes the underlying goal of planning starts with creating great places.
