Responsible Design Learning Community

Responsible Design Learning Community

The College of Architecture sponsors the Responsible Design Learning Community.  The goal of this community is to assist first-year students in their academic and social transition from high school to University life.

Members of the Learning Community:

  • live together on the same residence hall floor
  • learn together by taking three shared College of Architecture courses:  DSGN 110, DSGN 123 and DSGN 120
  • connect to students, upperclass student mentors, and faculty with shared interests
  • prepare for the future through exclusive academic, social, and professional activities and events
  • benefit from academic support programs
  • take field trips and participate in community service projects

Here are just a few of the testimonials from our students who participated in the RDLC:

“I joined this learning community because I am used to having a close group of friends. I came from a small town and a small private school, so being in a learning community seemed like it would be a good way to have that same feel in the dorms and in classes. After being in the learning community, that has proven to be true! I also wanted to be influenced by people that have the same goals and interests as me. This has really kept me focused on my design classes.”

– Anabella G., Pre-Architecture major, Sioux Falls, SD

“I joined the Responsible Design LC because I thought it would be helpful for me and make it easier to get accustomed to college and it did exactly that and more. It gave me new friends, mentors to help me with projects I'm having trouble with, and the ability to go right next door to ask a question or talk about anything architecture.”

– Curtis Y., Pre-Architecture, Bloomington, IL

“I feel like it is easier to accomplish certain tasks when you are in the learning community.  You have someone right down the hall from you if you need help with your homework at 3 in the morning.  My favorite part of being in the Learning Community is the bond you share with the other people in the community.  I feel as if the community has been a huge advantage to me because without it I would still be around the same people as high school. Those 15 other people have become some of my closest friends who, hopefully, I will have for the rest of my life.”

– Kelli M., Pre-Interior Design, Omaha, NE
