IDES 451 Capstone / Spring 2019

The intention is to design a space that challenges opinions on fashion norms as they relate to gender through providing an exhibition space that promotes discourse about fashion by showcasing custom gender neutral outfits available for purchase. NEWtral will include the community by giving back to the public. Donation of unwanted clothes coupled with creation of custom re-use garments, creates a basis for discourse about gender stereotypes as they relate to fashion while potentially helping the economically challenged population and reframing the idea of “used clothes”. This will be done through manipulation of overlapping linear grids derived by the existing building in relation to the Capitol Building. Manipulation will also occur with use of a void to generate a new entrance that emphasizes transition from outdoor to indoor while highlighting garment maker spaces.
