Teaching Description and Philosophy:

Emily Cerny taught third year studios as well as programs, standards and codes at UNL as a Lecturer/t. Her passion for codes comes from an interest in accessibility standards and how to shift the mindset from minimum adherence to inclusive, equitable design solutions. She looks forward to teaching on the topics of barrier-free design as well as intergenerational dwellings and support services and eagerly anticipates collaborating with the Gerontology department. Her teaching philosophy centers on Universal Design for Learning and providing multiple means of engagement to allow all students to utilize the best method(s) for their learning.

Research Interests:

Cerny's research focuses on inclusive design and gerontology (the study of aging) to push design beyond the minimum and create a better built environment for all. She looks forward to exploring topics such as aging in place, inclusion of assistive technologies, barriers for designers to design inclusively, design for neurodivergence, and challenges to caregivers in the built environment.
