PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Phyto provides a minimally invasive long-term solution to the city of Omaha, Nebraska’s lead pollution problem. Omaha is home to the largest residential EPA Superfund site in the country, due to the pollution created by multiple lead smelting and manufacturing plants that left behind over 100 years worth of lead contamination across Omaha, which disproportionately and severely affect the health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations today.

Pondering the pursuit of a more sustainable urban future, this sustainable urbanism studio builds on last semester’s 15 Minute City/Gateway Mall redevelopment effort. Landscape architecture students developed designs for portions of the open space and architecture students developed designs for selected buildings. This review will focus on the design and performance of these designs.

The scenario for this studio explores the following possibility, what if Amazon decided to locate its ‘HQ2’ in Lincoln.  The company has received lots of criticism about driving up residential costs, putting large burdens on host cities for infrastructure costs.
